Polyomavirus is a viral disease caused by the Avian Polyomavirus (APV), a member of the Papovaviridae family. The virus primarily affects very young birds and can lead to rapid death within 24 to 48 hours. Adult birds are usually resistant to infection — they typically develop antibodies and are able to clear the virus from their system within up to 90 days.
Polyomavirus is transmitted primarily through ingestion or inhalation. Infected birds shed highly resilient viral particles into the environment via feces, feather dust, and saliva.
Supportive care only, combined with isolation of the infected bird.
Clinical signs of polyomavirus infection may include loss of appetite, depression, diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, internal bleeding, and in severe cases – death. Young birds older than three weeks that survive the infection often develop feather abnormalities, which may result in French molt, a condition characterized by chronic feather loss.
This virus is not transmissible to humans.
